First time at live snooker
Start with one session, the actual seat plan and the entry rules for your venue. A live match has breaks between frames and an interval. Its finish depends on the frames played.

Know what your ticket covers
A session is a scheduled block of play, covering a complete match or part of a longer match. At the World Championship, longer matches continue across several sessions; your ticket admits you to the session printed on it. At the Masters, every match before the final is best of 11 and fits into one scheduled session. The best-of-19 final has afternoon and evening sessions. These are different bookings unless you buy a published all-day product.
Use your reserved seat and check the row, seat and session time together. Book both sessions if you want afternoon and evening play, or choose a published all-day product. Our World Championship, Masters and UK Championship guides hold the full published timetables and prices.
The table arrangement matters before you pay. The Crucible uses two tables through the quarter-finals, separated by a partition, then one for the semi-finals and final. The Masters uses one throughout. York’s 2026 price sheet shows two through the quarter-finals and one from the semi-finals. Use the event’s snooker seating plan for the temporary arena.
Arriving and finding your seat
Have the correct ticket ready before joining security. Find the admission barcode using the seller’s delivery instructions, and retain the booking reference. Alexandra Palace advises downloading tickets in advance. At the Crucible, the booking information permits tickets to be scanned from a phone; put the device away once the admission check is complete.
Entry times differ. The Crucible’s 2026 visitor sheet says doors open approximately one hour before a session; a 2027 seasonal sheet has not been found. The Masters 2027 venue listing publishes 11.30am doors; ask about evening arena access in your session email. A checked York AXS listing displays doors at 1pm, the playing time itself. Use the session email to check the arrival instructions.
Ask a steward for your route while the auditorium is still open. WST terms allow an unoccupied seat to be reallocated five minutes before the start, and late admission takes place at suitable breaks. Arriving on time avoids waiting outside while the first frame unfolds. If stairs, an aisle or an accessible position affect your visit, arrange that with the seller before choosing the seat.

What happens during a session
A frame is one game within the match. The players alternate visits to the table, and the referee calls scores and fouls. A long safety exchange is part of the contest. Watch where the cue ball finishes and which balls the next player can reach. The score display helps you follow both the frame score and the number of frames won.
A best-of-11 match ends when one player reaches six frames. It takes six to eleven frames. A final-session ticket at the Crucible can therefore produce much less play than a close match would. Start times are published; finishing times depend on play. Allow extra time before a train connection.
The usual mid-session interval comes after four frames in the formats covered here. Its clock time depends on the frames: quick scoring and tactical exchanges produce different frame lengths. Wait for the referee or stewards to announce the break. The interval’s clock time depends on the length of those four frames.
For travel planning, use this site’s editorial estimate of roughly three to four hours for a typical session. Play can finish earlier or later. A 7pm start can take you towards 10pm or 11pm and beyond. The event guides explain formats and any published early-finish terms separately.
Silence, applause and moving around
Stay quiet while a player is addressing the shot. Save conversations about the previous pot for the break between frames. Nearby seats hear whispered commentary. Before applauding, check whether the next player is settling into position. Follow the referee’s requests if the arena becomes noisy.
For ordinary trips to the toilets or bar, move between frames only, following the steward’s signal. Stay seated after a player’s break: the opponent can start immediately within the same frame. If you are unsure whether a frame is over, remain seated until staff release the aisle. Readmission can also mean waiting outside until the next suitable break.
The interval is the simplest time for refreshments and a toilet visit. Check where your entrance is before leaving, particularly where an arena has several coloured or numbered doors. Return when staff call the audience back. Leave the bar queue in time for the next frame.
An urgent medical need is different from an ordinary refreshment trip. Alert a steward and follow their directions. Explain predictable access needs before the visit so staff can help with the seating and exit route. The Crucible, Alexandra Palace and York Barbican access guides list the relevant contacts.
Phones and recording
WST’s general box-office terms prohibit mobile phones and unauthorised recording. Keep browsing, photography and filming out of the arena. Switch the phone off once it has served its ticket-scanning purpose, unless staff have specifically agreed an essential exception. A glowing screen and a vibration can distract even without a ringtone.
Keep cameras and recording devices out of your match plan. York’s venue terms also restrict recording without prior written consent and list professional equipment among prohibited items. A social-media clip is still a recording. If you need a device for an access or medical reason, agree its use with the venue before your visit.
These rules come from WST’s box-office terms and York’s venue terms, checked 6 October 2026. Your event email and staff instructions remain the practical instructions at the door.
Clothes, bags and payments
| Venue | Published practical difference |
|---|---|
| Crucible | 2026 guidance: A3-size bags searched; no suitcase or luggage cloakroom; bars accepted cash and cards. Recheck for 2027. |
| Alexandra Palace | Cashless: bank cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The Masters-specific bag limit remains unpublished; ask the Palace for the current rule. Its music-event limit covers music events. |
| York Barbican | Cashless. No bag storage. Avoid backpacks, suitcases and laptop bags; published small-bag dimensions conflict. |
WST requests smart clothing and excludes sportswear and team shirts in its terms. Choose comfortable clothes that meet the published dress rules. The Crucible visitor sheet describes a cool auditorium, so a removable layer is useful. London’s January hill and York’s late-autumn walk also require outdoor clothing.
Take the ticket, any concession evidence, a payment card and necessary medication. Leave luggage and large shopping bags at your accommodation or a separately checked storage service. Check whether your ticket package includes a cloakroom before packing.
WST terms allow food and drink bought on the premises only. York asks visitors with medical food or drink needs to contact it beforehand. Eat your own food outside before admission. Bag searches are part of entry, so keep essential items easy to identify.

After the last frame
Keep your return plan tied to the real finishing time. At Sheffield, the station is a published 10–15-minute walk from the theatres. York Barbican gives a 20-minute station walk. Alexandra Palace is uphill from the railway station; our Palm Court walk estimate is approximately 15–20 minutes. For an accessible route, use the venue’s access map and advice. Add the walk to your actual departure time after play.
Check the building’s readmission rules before going outside. York requires venue consent for readmission after leaving the venue. Ask before going out between sessions, and retain every ticket needed for later entry. For the full travel routes, refreshments and help contacts, use the Crucible hub, Alexandra Palace hub or York Barbican hub.

FAQs
Can I use my phone if it is silent?
WST terms prohibit mobile phones and unauthorised recording. Put it away after ticket checks; agree essential access or medical use with staff beforehand.
When can I leave my seat?
For an ordinary break, move between frames only and follow the steward. Admission back into the arena can be held until a suitable break.
How long will the session last?
Allow three to four hours as this site’s planning estimate. The finish depends on play and can fall outside that range.
Is the interval after four frames?
Usually, yes. Follow the referee’s announcement: the interval follows four frames, with clock time dependent on play.
Do all three venues take cash?
Alexandra Palace and York Barbican are cashless. The Crucible’s 2026 sheet allowed cash and cards, but its 2027 seasonal guidance is awaited.
