Snooker tournaments explained
The World Championship and UK Championship are ranking events. The Masters is an invitational. All three belong to the Triple Crown, but they offer different routes into the draw and different days out.

Start with the Triple Crown
The Triple Crown consists of the World Championship, UK Championship and Masters. The three titles are contested separately. Completing the career Triple Crown means winning each of them. WST identifies the Masters as one of these events in its official tournament overview.
Our next-edition guides cover the UK Championship, 28 November–6 December 2026, the Masters, 10–17 January 2027 and the World Championship, 17 April–3 May 2027. Book each event separately: the UK event is in York, the Masters is in north London, and the World Championship is in Sheffield.
For the transport and accommodation around those matches, use the York Barbican, Alexandra Palace and Crucible hubs. Each event page owns its complete price list and session schedule. Checked 6 October 2026.
What a ranking event means
A ranking tournament contributes counting prize money to the world ranking list. The event’s classification determines which prize money counts towards rankings. WST lists the World Championship and UK Championship as ranking competitions; the Masters is the contrasting top-16 invitational. Both types of competition sell public tickets, with seating and prices set for the individual event.
The WPBSA rankings explanation says that rankings use counting prize money from the previous two years. The list changes after ranking events. Seeding lists are fixed at designated cut-offs. Masters selection depends on ranking results elsewhere; its own prize money is excluded from the two-year total.
That distinction is useful when reading a draw. A ranking number explains a player’s position on a list. A seed number explains their place in this particular tournament. Knockout results decide which players advance to later sessions. To watch a particular player, find their scheduled match in the published draw and book that session.
The top-16 cut for each tournament
For the Masters, the top 16 after the UK Championship form the field. Entry comes through that ranking cut, with the tournament starting at the last 16. WST’s 3 October 2026 rankings update identifies the UK Championship as the Masters cut-off. The selection remained open at our 6 October check, ahead of the 2027 event.
For the UK Championship, the top 16 at its own designated cut go directly to York. Another 16 players reach York through qualifying. The 2026 qualifying announcement places that cut after the International Championship, with Leicester qualifying before the York main event. The rankings at that later cut determine direct York entry.
For the World Championship, 16 seeded players join 16 qualifiers in the Crucible draw. World seeding uses its own season-specific cut. The WPBSA Race to the Crucible follows that qualification contest. Use the event’s final draw to find the table, opponent and scheduled session for a named-player booking.
The Home Nations are four separate Opens
WST’s Home Nations series announcement brings together the English Open, Northern Ireland Open, Scottish Open and Welsh Open. They are ranking events. The names describe the host nations; the professional fields are international. A Welsh player can enter the English Open, and an English player can enter the Northern Ireland Open.
WST’s tiered-format announcement, published 5 April 2024 explains the structure introduced for the 2024/25 Home Nations events. The current event draw gives each player’s entry stage and first scheduled match. Read it alongside the timetable to choose an opening-day session.
Each Open has its own title, venue and ticket sale. Your order identifies the event, day and session. For these four Opens, the WST ticket directory is the starting point for their current official sales.
How the Masters invitational works
An invitational selects its players using stated eligibility rules. Spectators book through the public ticket sale. The Masters sells public tickets through its official routes while restricting the playing field to the selected top 16. There are 15 matches in a 16-player single-elimination bracket: eight opening matches, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and a final.
At Alexandra Palace those matches use one table throughout. The standard match is best of 11 frames, so the first player to six wins; the final is best of 19, requiring ten. Most sessions therefore offer one match that can produce a winner that day. The final is split across two sessions. See the Masters round and session table for the published 2027 schedule and the separate afternoon/evening tickets.
Check the full event name when looking at a calendar or ticket listing. This guide covers the January invitational at Alexandra Palace. Other events with Masters in their name have their own entry rules and booking routes.
Qualifying is part of the competition
A qualifier is a match used to earn a place in a later stage. The result determines entry to the later draw, including for established professionals who have to qualify. Qualifying results decide who advances, alongside any players who have direct entry under the event’s seeding rules.
For the 2026 UK Championship, qualifying is at Mattioli Arena in Leicester on 21–26 November. York begins on 28 November. WST announced £12 all-day qualifying admission, with eight match tables for the first four days and four for the last two. The multi-table set-up is at Leicester; York uses its separate temporary arena. Source: WST, 24 September 2026.
This creates two different spectator trips. Leicester gives you a multi-table qualifying day; York gives you the televised final stages with reserved session seating. Buy the ticket for the stage and venue you want to attend. Our qualifiers guide explains table arrangements, admission and the dated locations of other qualifying events.
Frames, matches, rounds and sessions
A frame is one game. A match contains several frames. A round is a stage of the draw. A session is a scheduled period of play for which you buy admission. A long match may span several sessions, so a session ticket and a complete-match ticket are different things.
At the Crucible, first-round matches are best of 19 and normally use two sessions. The second round and quarter-finals are best of 25 over three; semi-finals are best of 33 over four; the final is best of 35 over four. The World Championship format table links those lengths to the current dates. A first-round match can therefore outlast the single session printed on your ticket.
The UK Championship’s established format uses best of 11 through the semi-finals and best of 19 for the final. The event guide labels that established format while the separate 2026 draw is awaited. These frame targets also explain why finish times vary: the winner must reach the target, and individual frames take different amounts of time.
Which competition gives you one table?
The published 2027 Crucible plan has two tables through the quarter-finals and one from the semi-finals. A central partition separates the two-table arrangement. Your reserved seat faces its allocated part of the arena, with movement controlled during frames. The World Championship page carries the plans and the table explanation.
For York 2026, the official price sheet also keeps two tables through the quarter-finals, moving to one on 5 December for the semi-finals. The York event guide marks the unresolved Table 1/Table 2 naming and partition position alongside the official plans.
The Masters avoids that particular booking question because its entire tournament uses one table. This makes an opening-round ticket a different proposition from an opening-round seat in a split arena. Snooker kit and gifts
An event programme describes the competition you are attending; a playing cue is equipment for taking part elsewhere. Check a hospitality package’s inclusions before ordering a separate programme or radio. Our event price tables distinguish hospitality packages from ordinary seats; use the package description to see which extras are included.
