Off to the Snooker

Taking children to live snooker

Check the event’s admission rule before buying. A child who enjoys snooker on television still needs a ticket, the right accompanying adult and a session they can sit through.

The Crucible gap is a real admission question. [UNVERIFIED: tournament minimum age, infant admission and child concession policy for the 2027 World Championship.] The booking page, price sheet, visitor sheet and tournament terms were checked without finding a usable rule. Ask specifically about the 2027 World Championship when contacting the box office.

Buying the right family tickets

Choose adjacent seats in one session. Check every row and seat number before paying; book together to keep the accompanying adult and child adjacent.

The three published price sheets have no separate child-price band. Ask the event seller about babies, lap seating and paid seats for each age before purchasing the family’s tickets.

York’s venue terms normally require a ticket for children and infants over two, unless the event or booking terms say otherwise. Ask the UK Championship seller about tickets and seats for an infant. The Masters listing welcomes all ages; ask the venue about buggy storage and lap seating.

For published categories and seller links, go to World Championship tickets, Masters tickets or UK Championship tickets. These pages separate face-value prices from known fees.

Concessions and the actual family cost

For York 2026, concession prices are printed for weekday sessions from 30 November to 3 December. The listed eligibility is 65+, registered unemployed, students with NUS evidence, NHS staff with NHS ID, and registered disabled visitors. Concession eligibility follows those categories. The official sheet also identifies a free carer through the access booking arrangements.

The cheapest York Standard weekday session is £30 before seller fees. Two people paying Standard would therefore start at £60 for tickets, before travel or food. A selected Sunday afternoon last-32 session on 29 November is £32 each, so that pair starts at £64 before fees. Both totals are calculated from the published prices.

At the Masters, Standard C starts at £35 for selected last-16 sessions. The price sheet adds a 10% booking fee and a £2.10 Palace levy per ticket. That makes £40.60 each and £81.20 for two at that price. The included £1 charity donation is not added again. Check current adjacent-seat availability with the seller.

Use the local calculators on the Sheffield, London and York hubs for the whole trip. Enter paying visitors in the ticket-count field, including children who need paid seats. York’s calculator requires the actual quoted seller fees from the checkout quote.

Choosing a manageable first visit

An afternoon session gives you more daylight for the journey and avoids deliberately beginning the outing at 7pm. The finishing time still depends on play. Best-of-11 matches can end in six frames or require eleven. Our three-to-four-hour allowance is an editorial estimate; daytime play can also run beyond that estimate.

A Masters last-16 match has one table and one complete best-of-11 contest. The arena plan therefore avoids the two-table question. A 12 January 2027 afternoon Standard C ticket is among the £35 options before fees. Explain that play is normally quiet, even though entrances, intervals and celebrations can be livelier.

A York last-32 afternoon offers lower published Standard prices than its final. The 29 November session is a specific weekend option at £32 before fees. York still has two tables at that stage; study the snooker plan and ask the seller which match your seat faces. The one-table semi-finals and final cost more and arrive later in the tournament.

At the Crucible, early-round prices are below final-session prices, but confirm child admission first. A session can be only one part of a longer match. If your child expects to see a winner before leaving, explain this difference before booking. Our session-choice guide compares table layouts, prices and complete-match formats.

A final is a longer commitment. A best-of-19 Masters or UK final is split over two sessions, and the World final extends across two days. The trophy ceremony belongs after the match finishes; choose the concluding session to see it.

Practise the quiet part beforehand

Watch several frames together before the trip and explain when the audience can move. Practise remaining seated while someone lines up a shot, waiting to speak and leaving the aisle clear. A long safety exchange can demand more patience than a run of pots.

Agree a simple signal for a toilet visit or feeling overwhelmed. For ordinary breaks, wait until a frame has ended and follow the steward’s directions. Stay seated after a missed shot: the other player usually continues the same frame. On returning from the foyer, follow the steward’s signal for readmission at a suitable break.

WST terms prohibit phones and unauthorised recording. Keep videos and games off during play. Put devices away after ticket checks and discuss essential access use beforehand. A bag of noisy toys or a snack packet opened during a shot can create another distraction.

Use the usual interval after four frames for toilets and refreshments, following the announcement. Its timing varies with the frames. Explain that the first break follows the frames rather than the clock. The first-visit guide explains the sequence of play in more detail.

Access, sensory needs and necessary supplies

Tell the venue about a child’s access needs before selecting seats. Include the need to leave quickly, essential medication, food required for medical reasons, or a necessary companion. Ask which door and position will work with the temporary snooker arena. Use the tournament’s temporary arena plan when choosing an accessible position.

Alexandra Palace publishes information about sensory bags and quiet spaces, with arrangements and availability to be discussed. Its access guidance specifically invites discussion for children under seven. Ask the access team which quiet spaces and sensory supplies will be available for your Masters session.

Sheffield Theatres publishes familiarisation support and access contacts. Use the theatre relaxed-performance information pack for the building layout, and follow snooker’s quiet-play and movement rules in the arena. York’s access process uses Nimbus evidence and an AXS Digital Access Pass; arrange the account before tickets are needed.

Use the dedicated Crucible access guide, Alexandra Palace access guide and York access guide for sources and booking routes. Necessary medical bags and refreshments should be agreed with staff rather than left to a security conversation on arrival.

Food, buggies and the journey home

Eat before entry or use the venue’s outlets. WST’s terms allow on-site purchases, not an outside picnic in the auditorium. York considers access and medical food requirements individually. Alexandra Palace and York are cashless, so bring a payment card; Sheffield’s cash-and-card information is from the 2026 visitor sheet and needs its seasonal 2027 confirmation.

Keep packing modest. The Masters has no confirmed snooker-specific bag dimensions in the checked information, and York’s published size rules conflict. York has no bag-storage facility. Buggies, spare clothing and large changing bags need a direct venue answer, especially if you also have rail luggage. Arrange luggage storage separately from your venue visit.

Build the return journey around the finish and the walk. Sheffield station is 10–15 minutes from the theatre; York Barbican’s directions give 20 minutes to York station. At Alexandra Palace, the hill is part of the trip, and the W3 is an alternative to walking from the railway or Tube. Check the actual dated service rather than relying on a daytime frequency.

Decide before buying which adult will leave if a child becomes tired. The remaining children must still have an adult who satisfies the event’s age rule. Tickets remain paid for when you choose to leave early. York also requires consent to re-enter after leaving the building.

Our venue hubs list food stops and city activities separately from the interval. In York, do not plan the Blue Bell as a family stop: its own house rules exclude children. Brew York’s Walmgate venue welcomes families. Check current opening hours and use a substantial gap between sessions for a meal outside.
